We present in this section our own perspective on diverse architectural
topics covered in the amazing photographic collection of the Basel
Mission. These are our personal interpretations, with a focus on India
- the country we come from. We have commented on general topics as
varied as building materials used in the 19th century, as well as
presented our understanding of the bungalow, temple and mosque architecture.
We have made more detailed observations on Indian towns and cities
such as Mangalore, Cannanore and Calicut where the Mission was active
and well organized in its multi-faceted work. These observations,
while based on the visual material in the archives have also been
informed by our contemporary experiences and perceptions of these
places.
We have attempted to make connections with similar architecture in
China, the Far East and Africa - places where the Basel Mission was
actively working and are places also captured in the archives. In
this, we could sometimes have erred in our understanding and analysis
of the history and architecture of places outside India. We would
therefore welcome comments and corrections wherever we have faulted. |
