Graves and Cemeteries: Known as the "whiteman's grave," West Africa was particularly unhealthy for European missionaries. Morbidity and mortality was extremely high among European missionaries and many passed away in their first year in West Africa. Malaria and yellow fever were probably the worst culprits. In consequence, mission cemeteries and isolated graves littered the coast and interior of West Africa. |
